The Humanitarian Service medal awarded October 1 & 2, 1980 was for the rescue of two different boatloads of Vietnamese Refugees while we were steaming from P.I. to Singapore. After the second load came aboard, we had 147 refugees on the fantail living under tarps strung from the aft superstructure to the missile platform. The cooks tried to serve them pepper steak and rice, but they couldn't keep the steak down. We ended up just giving them rice until we could offload them when we made port in Singapore for refueling.

Hey, what period did the '89 MUC cover? I left the boat in May of '88 and there was a lot of talk about another award, we just came off of a cruise, but I lost touch. Any info??? MM2 Barfield, I remember you. I came aboard as an EMFN in June of '86, made 2nd right before I left Yoko for Hawaii in '88. The cobwebs have gathered through the years though. Any memories?
